The Atlantic Rainforest Discovery Coast- and Southeast Reserves represent the largest Nature Preservation Complex in the Southern Atlantic region.

It is considered the third most endangered area of tropical rainforest on earth after New Caledonia (Oceania) and Madagascar (Africa).

Because of its rich biodiversity and importance to humanity, the area was declared an International Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1991 and inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1999.

The 32 protected areas that make up the site (some 600,000 ha in total) display the biological wealth and evolutionary history of the last remaining Atlantic forests. From mountains covered by dense forests, down to wetlands, coastal islands with isolated mountains and dunes, the area comprises a rich natural environment of great scenic beauty.

In addition to its natural values the sites do also comprise a serial of cultural features. The Discovery Coast in Southern Bahia represent for example outstanding examples of first European occupation of the New World and a unique testimony of this period in modern history.

Some of the most outstanding features are the historic centres of Porto Seguro, Trancoso and Santa Cruz Cabrália. Numerous archaeological sites, both prehistoric and historic, can be found in the area. The ruins of Brazil's first church lay at the top of a cliff to the north of Porto Seguro. An old Tupi civilisation town has recently been unearthed.

Tour operators and ecological tour guides visiting those protected areas have to be licensed with Brazil’s EMBRATUR. Brazil Adventure International operates rainforest trekking & hiking tours through these unique landscapes.
