EcoTourism Policies

Tribes travel are a previous winner of the British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow award (2002). Our Environmental Policies are:

• We work in cooperation with local communities as far as possible. We offer fairly-traded revenue and use locally owned and run services such as hotels. We try to ensure that the local people are happy to receive tourists in their home region, and are informed of the possible impact.

• We encourage learning about local cultures as opposed to a voyeuristic manner of relating to different cultures.

• To organise our trips we use local conservationists or operators who have a strong environmental background. We vet the operating policy of everyone we work with.

• Most of our guides are local people who know their country well, and are usually specialists in wildlife, botany or archeology. We generally also use the services of indigenous guides when in their lands.

• We promote a respect for local communities and their environment. Our guides will help you to understand and respect the areas and people you are visiting.

• Group sizes are kept to a max of about 12 (less on some trips) to minimise our impact on the local people, the wildlife and the environment.

Environmental / Cultural Aims

• To show clients special parts of the world through the eyes of the people who live there.

• To offer excellent service and comprehensive information to clients.

• To offer the broadest range of excellent quality holidays run on fair trade principles.

• To be a marketing platform for community initiatives, harnessing money for development projects.

• To give clients the choice to buy a fair trade product in the knowledge that the background research has been done.

• To conserve biodiversity and cultural diversity through tourism.

• To help preserve the world’s heritage through tourism.

• To maintain and encourage the practice and revival of local skills and traditions.

• To empower local people in host destinations to control their own destinies.

• To try to ensure that all our activities are environmentally sound.
