Travel with Respect

Most Americans abhor serious racism. That said, prejudice can still be a problem, especially in the south. The subject of race is touchy, and best avoided with new acquaintances. The odds that you will be the target of some kind of racial ill-will are extremely low, but if that does happen, the best thing to do is to just walk away, to prevent the situation from escalating. Public nudity is generally a no-no, although exceptions abound at specifically nude beaches, resorts, and at a few public festivals such as Burning Man or Mardi Gras. But be advised: at festivals, male nudity is almost unheard of, and women rarely go beyond flashing their breasts for a few seconds. Smoking is outlawed in almost any public indoor space, and lighting up in a restaurant or bar is a sure way to be kicked out. Some hotels are even entirely smoke-free. More and more Americans consider a tobacco habit to be unseemly and annoying. Religion - in all its forms - is widely practiced. (The majority of Americans are Christians; there are also plenty of Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and Hindus, among others.) Some denominations openly proselytize--it is quite possible that you will be targeted for conversion. If you are not interested in discussing religion with someone, change the subject or go about your business. As in most countries, comments mocking religious belief will generally not be well-received. The attack of September 11, 2001, in which close to 3,000 Americans died, is still bitterly fresh in peoples' minds, and is extremely painful in the New York-New Jersey area, where many people lost friends or relatives. Never joke about it, even if you think you know your company. The Iraq war has caused intense political debate within the United States. Join in the debate if you wish, and recognize that many Americans have either served in the military themselves or know someone who has served there--in some cases, never to come home. Though polls indicate that a sizable majority of Americans now oppose the war, most strongly support the troops. A foreigner expressing disagreement with US policy or the actions of the military might not be well-received.

Travel Safe

Like most things in the US, crime varies greatly depending on the area. Most (but NOT all) large cities have higher crime rates, as might be expected. Outside of major cities and urban areas, however, crime rates are usually lower. As always, common sense goes a long way: do not go out alone at night, avoid high-crime areas, be wary of strangers, and do not draw attention to yourself. Carrying large quantities of cash is generally also not a good idea; tourists are sometimes targeted by thieves since they are more likely to be carrying cash with them. Credit cards are much safer and widely accepted. When in cities, be ready for strangers who will approach, tell a tale of woe (often involving a car in need of refueling or some other scenario requiring a modest amount of money), and then request several dollars. In the majority of cases the tale is untrue, and they pose no threat, so don't feel any obligation to part with your cash. A polite "Sorry, I can't help" will usually be sufficient; a firm "No" and walking away will almost always work.
